From Idea to Bookshelf

For this workshop, we’ll be following an award-winning picture book from conception to publication and beyond through the eyes of the people who made it happen. Join us for the journey of The Music in George’s Head with the author, illustrator, editor, art director and agent who put it all together. Participants will attend breakout sessions from faculty members, and all participants will receive a written critique of ONE picture book manuscript, ONE picture book dummy or illustration portfolio. Critiques are limited to 10 per faculty member.

Susan Cohen

Susan has been an agent for 37 years—all at Writers House. She does mostly children’s & YA books (both authors and illustrators), but also handles adult books.

Barbara Grzeslo, Art Director
Boyds Mills Press, Calkins Creek and WordSong
Barbara Grzeslo

Barbara Grzeslo is an Art Director for Boyds Mills Press, Calkins Creek, and WordSong. She came to Highlights with a broad and varied background—a full career in the corporate sector—culminating as Principle Designer at Digital Equipment Corporation; Creative Director of Grapheme (the design arm of Cossette, a Canadian advertising agency); and partner in a design studio in New York City. She has taught part-time at York University (Toronto), Harvard, and Parsons (NY). Since 2001, Barbara has immersed herself in children’s publishing, working at Farrar Straus and Giroux, and Feiwel and Friends. She arrived in Honesdale after living and working in Toronto, Boston, London, England, and New York City. Barbara has her MFA from Yale University.

Stacy Innerst, Illustrator

Stacy Innerst

Stacy Innerst is an acclaimed artist, illustrator and arts educator. His picture books for children have earned a host of starred reviews as well as numerous awards, including a 2017 NY Times/NY Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Book Award (for Ruth Bader Ginsberg), the 2017 SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration (for The Music in George’s Head), the BCCB Blue Ribbon, two Parents’ Choice Gold Medals and recognition by the NY Society of Illustrators, the Smithsonian and the Junior Library Guild, among many others. M is for Music was named a Best Book of the Year by the School Library Journal and Levi Strauss Gets a Bright Idea was a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2011. His paintings and prints have been exhibited widely in New York, California and throughout the United States and abroad.

Breakout: Collaboration
Stacy will talk about the collaborative process of working with Art Directors, Creative Directors and editors when bringing a picture book to life—pacing, spreads vs. single pages, and overall aesthetic.

 


Suzanne Slade, Author

Suzanne Slade is the award-winning author of over 100 children’s books. A mechanical engineer by degree, Suzanne enjoys writing about science topics as well as fascinating historical figures. In addition to The Music in George’s Head: George Gershwin Creates Rhapsody in Blue (four starred reviews, Junior Library Guild selection, Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration, Booklist Top 10 Arts Book for Youth), some of her recent titles include The Inventor’s Secret (NSTA Best STEM Book, NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book, CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book), Out of School and Into Nature (NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book), Dangerous Jane, and Astronaut Annie (her first fiction title!).

Breakout: Re-Envisioning Your Picture Book Manuscript (Or: How to Be Brave and Experiment with New Ideas)
During this workshop writers will analyze popular fiction and nonfiction picture books as they uncover story structure ideas and techniques to try on current works-in-progress and new picture book ideas. Prepare to dig, discover, and dream big as you re-envision your manuscript!

 


Carolyn Yoder, Senior Editor
Calkins Creek

Carolyn P. Yoder is the senior editor of Calkins Creek Books, the U.S. history imprint of Boyds Mills Press, a Highlights Company. Calkins Creek publishes nonfiction and historical fiction picture books, nonfiction, and historical fiction novels. Calkins Creek titles have won numerous awards, most notably the Sibert Medal, the Sibert Honor, the Jane Addams Book Award, the Orbis Pictus Honor, the Grateful American Book Prize, and the Jefferson Cup Award. Previously she was editor-in-chief and associate publisher at Cobblestone Publishing and director of the NH Antiquarian Society. She lives and works in Lawrenceville, NJ.
