Developing Characters, Setting, and Voice through Short Fiction with Joy Givens
Sometimes, writers of novel-length works can get so caught up in word counts and chapter titles that we begin to lose our characters and their journeys within the structure. Taking the time to explore our characters through short fiction is an engaging, rewarding way both to build skills and to deepen our broader stories. This workshop will include a discussion of short fiction elements and styles, provide examples of short fiction that support character development and world building, and lead writers through a timed writing exercise to get the creative juices flowing!
Writing for the Educational Market with Rebecca Hirsch
Want to get paid to write? Want editors contacting you? Educational publishers are looking for people to write fun fiction, lively nonfiction, kid-friendly poetry, and more. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to find and land gigs, how to please an editor, and, importantly, how to get hired back. You’ll discover tips for tackling the trickier parts of this market, including deadlines, educational specs, word count, and reading level. This workshop will give you all the tools you need to launch your career in the educational market.
